So here we go – The Most Comprehensive Review of
Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
No fluff, no filler – Just what you want and need to know before purchasing.
This Garmin GPS is selling online for less than two hundred dollars and includes features like text-to-speech that is typically present in more expensive gps devices. It includes Photo Navigation to let you upload geo-coded images and navigate to them, Digital Elevation Model Basemap that displays 3D terrain features, Long Term Ephemeris Prediction that helps find satellites faster and the option to send addresses on to your Garmin gps from Google Maps or Mapquest from your PC.
The nüvi 255W comes with City Navigator® NT preloaded street maps, which include a points of interest (POIs) database with restaurants, hotels, fuel, ATMs and more. Just touch the display to enter a destination, and your nüvi leads you there with voice directions so you never have to take your eyes off the road.
The Garmin nüvi 255W powers up fast and is ready to use in less than a minute. Satellite acquisition takes anywhere up to 3 minutes.
On the nüvi 255W main screen you can see 2 main icons – “Where to?” and “View Map” and also Volume and Tools choices below. The user interface is so intuitive that there is no instruction manual included, Garmin includes only a quick start manual. Additional guides can be found online.
nüvi 255W has a slim design and it fits easily in your pocket or purse. It’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes navigation possible by car or foot. The “Where Am I?” emergency locator, always lets you know your location. Just tap the screen for your coordinates, the closest address and intersection, police stations, hospitals, and fuel stations.
Navigation is only the beginning. Garmin nüvi 255W has several travel tools like world travel clock, JPEG image viewer, measurement converter, currency converter, calculator and more.
When driving around I found the nüvi 255W working very well. Choosing destination is possible using direct input – searching an address or transferring addresses from Mapquest or Google. Besides these, Garmin provides various additional ways to find destinations. During the use I found the battery lasting from three hours to three and half hours.
I have heard people complaining about the voice commands being too low or too robotic. I found the volume loud enough to hear even with my radio on. There are voice styles present and additional offered on the Garmin website.
But there are a few things I didn’t like
The Bad Points of Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen GPS
The set comes without the mini-USB cable. Garmin should consider adding a mini-USB cable with this bundle.
When charging the nüvi 255W there’s no charge indicator. That is not a huge issue since the unit can be charged in the vehicle however it’s nice to know when the device is fully charged.
The Good Points of Garmin nüvi 255W 4.3-Inch Widescreen GPS
GPS works terrific, Widescreen provides ample information in clear format, Map locations via Google Maps and PC, TTS enabled, rapid start up, Quick satellite detection
And so we come to the and of the Garmin nuvi 255W review. Overall it is no doubt one of the best ones I have tried out and for sure the leader in comparison to other entry level GPS units. While it is sold as an entry level gps, it has features that let it operate like a more expensive GPS model. It’s more advanced features like TTS, clear and simple interface, quick satellite detection and routing, affordable frice – that is the combination you can’t find anywhere else. If that is what you are looking for, then…
…Garmin nuvi 255W is the one to get.
